Falsetto

Vocal registers are divided into four categories starting from the highest to the lowest register. The highest register comprises of the whistle, after which comes the falsetto, then the modal and finally with the vocal fry as the lowest vocal register. The falsetto is only one octave higher than the modal vocal register. This sound comes out by the vibrations produced by the ligamentous edges of our vocal folds. Professional singers are mostly aware of this note which is possessed by men and women and is also mentioned in speech pathology. The falsetto is characterized by its sound that resembles the music played by flutes and has a very breathy feel to it. The falsetto is no overtones and the quality of tone along with its dynamic variation is very much limited as compared to that of the modal vocal register.

Special Quality

Those singers who are able to hit the falsetto vocal register are considered extremely blessed and talented as this is a vocal phonation that helps singers go way beyond the normal range of humans. Much research has been done on this subject and some people have gone as far as saying that women do not even have the falsetto. However that is not true. What’s true is the fact that training to use it the right way is not taught by many people and it is a great skill that requires a lot of practice. However for some singers the falsetto vocal register just comes out naturally and flawlessly. Some of these singers are Beyonce Knowles, Christina Aguilera, Whitney Houston, and Leona Lewis. The use of the falsetto is quite old and till today it is a great strength that singers dream to have.
